Ensure the vitality of quality reporting.
Strengthening California Journalism
The California Press Foundation enriches and grows California’s news gathering ecosystem by encouraging inclusivity, collaboration and the ongoing support of quality journalism education.
For nearly 150 years, the core mission of CPF has been to strengthen the future of journalism in the Golden State. We assure the future and integrity of California journalism by partnering with educators to help fund student journalism programs at all three levels, by recognizing and honoring contemporary achievements and by guarding the history and traditions of California journalism. Through education, grantmaking and statewide partnerships, CPF works to ensure a diverse and thriving media landscape that serves all Californians.

Our Programs

Internship Grants
Each year, CPF awards grants to select students who demonstrate an exceptional interest in pursuing careers in the media business in California.
Each recipient receives a $3,000 stipend and joins a year-long cohort that provides access to mentorship, resources, training and a supportive professional network.
Students must secure an internship on their own at a California news company. Internships can occur in spring, summer or fall but must be full-time and last at least six weeks.View the list of former interns.

Equipment Grants
Each year, CPF’s Equipment Grant Program funds essential reporting tools for student news programs at middle schools, high schools, community colleges and universities statewide.
CPF’s equipment grants help educators expand learning opportunities, support student-led publications and ensure more young journalists have access to professional reporting tools.

Journalism Education Collaborative
JOUR•Ed Collaborative, an interactive directory developed by CPF in partnership with the California State University, Northridge Journalism Department, serves as a modern interface between journalism education and the industry.
By offering a comprehensive and accessible repository of resources, the JOUR•Ed database streamlines the search for relevant programs, publications, and research to expand opportunities for journalism educators, professionals, and students alike.
It’s free for educators and easy to use.
